Interlock® Standing Seam Metal Roofing — Specification & Installation Manual — frequently asked questions

What is Interlock® Standing Seam and what are its panel dimensions?

Interlock® Standing Seam is a vertical-run aluminum panel roof finished with the Alunar® Coating System. Panels are roll-formed with a ribbed contour for added strength, are 17" (43.2 cm) wide with a 1" seam height, and are manufactured to length in continuous form up to a maximum of 26 feet. Each panel is clipped and fastened, then the next panel is overlapped and securely lock-formed in place.

Can Interlock Standing Seam be installed over an existing roof, and what slope is required?

Yes — it can be installed on new construction or applied over existing roofs, and a leveling underlayment may be used to reduce surface imperfections. The minimum slope is 3:12 when installed with an Ice & Water underlayment, or 4:12 minimum with standard underlayment, over 1/2" minimum sheathing or tightly fitting boards covered with synthetic roofing underlayment.

Is Interlock Standing Seam fire-rated and impact-resistant?

The system is available with a Non-combustible "Class A" fire rating, and it meets UL Standard 2218 Class 4, the impact standard for impact (hail) resistance. The gauge-0.028" aluminum panels also resist cracking and splitting and are wind- and weather-resistant. These ratings make it suitable for fire-prone and hail-prone regions.

What specialty panel options are available for custom roof features?

Beyond standard panels, Standing Seam offers Curved and Tapered specialty panels for custom roofing features such as turrets, radius eaves and conical forms. A two-piece ridge cap with vented closure, valley trim manufactured in 10' lengths (with wider valleys available for high-snow areas), and chimney/skylight collar details complete the system.

Who is responsible for code compliance on a Standing Seam project?

The manual states that it is the responsibility of architects, builders and roof installers to ensure that all construction bylaws and building codes are adhered to. Interlock supplies the panels, clips, fasteners and matched trims, while the design professional confirms wind-load and code requirements for the specific project and region.

What advantages does Interlock Standing Seam offer over other roofing?

The manual cites a Lifetime Limited Warranty, energy efficiency, curb appeal, weather and wind resistance, low maintenance, lightweight construction, superior strength and durability, the Alunar® Coating System, no cracking or splitting, and a full interlocking connection system. Its light weight requires no special structural preparation, reducing structural cost.
